HeySunbird completed the audit, rebuild and 2026 relaunch of the EEGonline learning environment, the specialist distance-learning programme run by the Neurological Association of South Africa in collaboration with the University of Cape Town.

The project covered the full Moodle learning management system, from technical and structural audit through to course rebuild, learner experience improvements, quality assurance, launch preparation and ongoing support.

For the client, the work was about more than refreshing an LMS. It was about ensuring that an established specialist medical education programme had a stable, well-structured and supportable learning environment that could match the quality of the teaching behind it.

The programme behind the platform

EEGonline Moodle course overview

EEGonline is an established clinical education programme designed primarily for neurology registrars and other medical professionals learning the principles and practice of electroencephalography, or EEG.

The programme combines specialist teaching with practical interpretation of EEG recordings and supports clinicians in developing the knowledge and pattern-recognition skills required to interpret EEGs with greater confidence.

The learning model is highly visual and interactive. Participants work through structured learning material, EEG waveform examples, tutor-led teaching, discussion activities and assessments over an extended period of study. That places specific demands on the LMS.

Moodle cannot simply act as a repository for documents and videos. It needs to guide participants through a clear learning journey, handle complex clinical resources, support assessment and discussion, make progression easy to understand and give tutors and administrators a reliable environment in which to deliver the programme. That was the focus of the rebuild.

The brief: protect the teaching, improve the learning experience

The academic expertise and core programme content were already well established. HeySunbird’s role was to examine how that content was being delivered through Moodle and rebuild the learning environment around the needs of participants, tutors and programme administrators.

The project began with a detailed audit of the existing LMS. We reviewed the course architecture, navigation, content organisation, learner pathways, activities, assessments and technical setup to identify where the experience could be clearer, more consistent or more reliable.

The audit looked at the platform from several perspectives.

  • Could a participant understand where they were in the programme and what they needed to do next?

  • Could tutors deliver and manage their teaching without unnecessary platform friction?

  • Were assessments, learning activities and resources structured consistently?

  • Would the LMS remain manageable once the course was live and participants were actively working through it?

These are small questions individually, but together they determine whether an online learning programme feels considered or frustrating.

For clinicians studying alongside demanding professional commitments, unnecessary friction has a cost. Their attention should be on interpreting EEGs and engaging with the learning, not trying to understand the platform.

What HeySunbird delivered

HeySunbird managed the work across the Moodle learning environment from initial audit through to launch and ongoing delivery support.

Full Moodle audit

We completed a detailed review of the existing LMS and course environment, including:

  • course architecture and structure

  • learner journeys and progression

  • navigation and usability

  • organisation and presentation of learning content

  • activities and assessments

  • consistency across course areas

  • technical and functional issues

  • administrative usability

  • launch readiness and areas of delivery risk

The audit created a clear roadmap for what needed to be retained, reorganised, rebuilt, corrected or tested before the next programme intake.

Course architecture and Moodle rebuild

The course environment was then restructured and rebuilt within Moodle. This included reorganising course areas and learning materials so that the structure of the LMS more closely reflected the intended teaching journey.

Navigation and content hierarchy were refined to give participants clearer signposting throughout the programme and reduce unnecessary searching or uncertainty.

The aim was simple: participants should understand where they are, what they need to do and what comes next.

Learning experience improvements

We reviewed how learning activities and resources were presented throughout the course and improved the experience around them. That included considering how participants move between teaching content, EEG examples, activities, discussions and assessments, and ensuring that the learning experience remained consistent as they progressed through the programme.

In specialist medical education, the LMS needs to support the cognitive work rather than compete with it.

Assessment and activity review

Assessments and course activities formed part of the wider audit and rebuild.

We reviewed how these elements were structured and presented within Moodle and addressed issues that could affect usability, progression or course delivery.

The purpose was to create a more coherent relationship between learning content, practice, interaction and assessment.

Technical troubleshooting and issue resolution

The project also involved identifying and resolving technical and functional issues across the existing course environment.

This formed an important part of preparing the programme for launch. A functioning LMS is not enough. The platform needs to behave consistently across the complete learner journey, particularly once a live cohort is working through it.

Quality assurance

Before launch, the rebuilt programme went through a structured quality assurance process. Course areas, activities, assessments, resources and learner journeys were reviewed and tested to identify issues before participants encountered them. This stage is often less visible than the build itself, but it is one of the most important parts of online learning delivery.

A small configuration error, broken activity or unclear instruction can create disproportionate confusion once a cohort is live.

Launch preparation and delivery

HeySunbird supported the programme through final readiness and the 2026 launch.

The work moved beyond technical completion to operational readiness, ensuring that the Moodle environment was prepared for real participants, tutors and programme delivery.

Ongoing participant, course and LMS support

HeySunbird’s involvement did not end when the programme went live.

We continue to support the Moodle environment, the course and its participants throughout delivery.

That means managing the practical issues that emerge once an online programme is being used in real life, supporting participants when they need assistance and helping maintain the quality and reliability of the learning environment throughout the programme.

Why this work mattered

The value of the rebuild is not found in Moodle itself. It sits in what the platform allows the academic team and participants to do.

For participants, a clearer and more consistent learning environment removes unnecessary cognitive load. The technology becomes quieter, allowing them to focus on complex clinical material.

For tutors, a stable and organised platform supports teaching rather than adding another administrative burden.

For the Neurological Association of South Africa and UCT, the rebuild provides a stronger operational foundation for delivering and supporting an established specialist programme.

It also reduces the risk that technical inconsistencies, unclear course structures or avoidable support issues undermine the quality of the academic experience.

That distinction matters in online learning. Excellent content cannot compensate indefinitely for a poor learning environment. The academic programme, LMS, assessments, learner support and operational processes have to work together.

A relationship built over more than six years

There is another part of this project that matters to HeySunbird: the history behind it.

My relationship with the EEGonline team began more than six years ago while I was working at Hubble Studios.

It continued during my time at Noodle and, following the launch of HeySunbird, developed into this latest phase of work.

That continuity has never been about moving a client from one company to another. It reflects a professional relationship that has grown across different chapters of my career, with each organisation playing its own role at the time.

Over those six years, I have developed a deep understanding of the programme, the people behind it, the way it is delivered and the practical realities of supporting it.

That institutional knowledge became particularly useful during the latest rebuild.

We were not approaching the programme as outsiders trying to understand it for the first time. There was already context around what mattered, where previous challenges had existed, how the teaching model worked and what participants and academics needed from the platform.

Good partnerships often develop this way. They are built over time through consistent delivery, shared context and trust, then evolve as the organisations and people involved evolve too.

For me, seeing EEGonline continue from Hubble Studios to Noodle and now into its work with HeySunbird has been one of the most meaningful examples of that kind of professional continuity.

Beyond launch day

A successful launch is an important milestone, but launch day is only one point in the life of an online programme. The more useful measure is what happens afterwards.

  • Can participants navigate the course confidently?

  • Can the academic team teach without fighting the technology?

  • Can issues be resolved quickly?

  • Can the platform be maintained as the programme develops?

  • Can future cohorts be supported without rebuilding the operating model every time.

Those are the questions that determine whether an online learning environment works over the long term.

HeySunbird’s ongoing role with EEGonline is focused on that continuity: supporting the LMS, the course and its participants as the programme progresses. The project reflects the way we approach online learning more broadly. We look at the complete system behind a programme: the learning strategy, course architecture, LMS, learner experience, assessments, quality assurance, support and delivery.

Because a strong online course is rarely the result of one clever feature.

It is the result of hundreds of small decisions working together well.
